If you've started a GLP-1 medication, or you're supporting someone who has, you've probably heard about the headline effects: appetite changes, steady weight loss, better blood sugar control. What gets talked about far less is what's happening lower down, specifically inside your mouth.

Dentists are increasingly flagging a cluster of oral symptoms in patients taking these medications, informally nicknamed "Ozempic mouth" or "Ozempic teeth." It's not that the drug harms your teeth directly, there's no evidence of that. It's that GLP-1 medications change several things in the body at once (saliva, hydration, digestion, appetite), and your oral microbiome is caught right in the middle of all of it (1).

This article explains what GLP-1s actually do, why the mouth is affected, and what that tends to look like in practice.


How Do GLP-1 Medications Like Ozempic and Mounjaro Work?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your gut naturally produces after you eat. It tells your pancreas to release insulin, slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach, and sends a "you're full" signal to your brain (2).

1. Reduced saliva flow

Saliva isn't just moisture. It buffers acid, washes away food debris, and delivers minerals like calcium and phosphate back to your teeth. When flow drops, all of that protection drops with it. Eventually, the mix of bacteria in your mouth shifts toward species that thrive in a drier, less buffered environment (5).

2. Eating less means fewer saliva triggers

Chewing and eating are two important natural triggers for saliva production.   • Bad breath: reduced saliva can impair the mouth's natural cleansing and odour-control mechanisms, while reflux, nausea and vomiting may provide additional contributors to halitosis.
  • Increased plaque and higher cavity risk: saliva normally helps clear food debris, buffer acids and protect tooth surfaces, so reduced salivary flow may increase susceptibility to plaque accumulation and dental caries.

  • Rethink post-nausea brushing: If you've been sick, rinse with water first rather than brushing immediately, brushing straight after vomiting can spread stomach acid across softened enamel (11).
